On 19 September 1846, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to two small children, Melanie Mathieu and Maximin Giraud, on the mountain of La Salette in the French Alps. She was crying, and around her neck was a crucifix, with a hammer and pincers on either side. 

The vision was approved by the diocesan bishop in 1851.

The Shrine of LaSalette is of great authenticity and is destined to have a future. I love this devotion and shall be glad to see it spread.
