Saint Alphonsus Maria de Liguori
Profile

Born to the nobility, Alphonsus was a child prodigy; he became extremely well-educated, and received his doctorate in law from the University of Naples at age 16. He had his own legal practice by age 21, and was soon one of the leading lawyers in Naples, though he never attended court without having attended Mass first. He loved music, could play the harpsichord, and often attended the opera, though he frequently listened without bothering to watch the over-done staging. As he matured and learned more and more of the world, he liked it less and less, and finally felt a call to religious life. He declined an arranged marriage, studied theology, and was ordained at age 29.

Preacher and home missioner around Naples. Noted for his simple, clear, direct style of preaching, and his gentle, understanding way in the confessional. Writer on asceticism, theology, and history; master theologian. He was often opposed by Church officials for a perceived laxity toward sinners, and by government officials who opposed anything religious. Founded the Redemptoristines women's order in Scala in 1730. Founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Liguorians; Redemptorists) at Scala, Italy in 1732.

Appointed bishop of the diocese of Sant'Agata de' Goti, Italy by Pope Clement XIII in 1762. Worked to reform the clergy and revitalize the faithful in a diocese with a bad reputation. He was afflicted with severe rheumatism, and often could barely move or raise his chin from his chest. In 1775 he resigned his see due to ill health, and went into what he thought would be a prayerful retirement.

In 1777 the royal government threatened to disband his Redemptorists, claiming that they were covertly carrying on the work of the Jesuits, who had been suppressed in 1773. Calling on his knowledge of the Congregation, his background in thelogy, and his skills as a lawyer, Alphonsus defended the Redemptorists so well that they obtained the king's approval. However, by this point Alphonsus was nearly blind, and was tricked into giving his approval to a revised Rule for the Congregation, one that suited the king and the anti-clerical government. When Pope Pius VI saw the changes, he condemned it, and removed Alphonsus from his position as leader of the Order. This caused Alphonsus a crisis in confidence and faith that took years to overcome. However, by the time of his death he had returned to faith and peace.

Alphonsus vowed early to never to waste a moment of his life, and he lived that way for over 90 years. Declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius IX in 1871.

When he was bishop, one of Alphonsus's priests led a worldly life, and resisted all attempts to change. He was summoned to Alphonsus, and at the entrance to the bishop's study he found a large crucifix laid on the threshold. When the priest hesitated to step in, Alphonsus quietly said, "Come along, and be sure to trample it underfoot. It would not be the first time you have placed Our Lord beneath your feet."

Saint of the Day Profile

Catholic Saint of the Day Profile

Catholic Saint of the Day Profile, Saint Ignatius of Loyola

Saint Ignatius of Loyola
Profile

Born to the Spanish nobility. Youngest of twelve children. Page in the Spanish court of Ferdinand and Isabella. Military education. Soldier, entering the army in 1517, and serving in several campaigns. Wounded in the leg by a cannonball at the siege of Pampeluna on 20 May 1521, an injury that left him partially crippled for life. During his recuperation the only books he had access to were The Golden Legend, a collection of biographies of the saints, and the Life of Christ by Ludolph the Carthusian. These books, and the time spent in contemplation, changed him.

On his recovery he took a vow of chastity, hung his sword before the altar of the Virgin of Montserrat, and donned a pilgrim's robes. He lived in a cave from 1522 to 1523, contemplating the way to live a Christian life. Pilgrim to Rome and the Holy Land in 1523, where he worked to convert Muslims. In 1528 he began studying theology in Barcelona and Alcala in Spain, and Paris, France receiving his degree on 14 March 1534. His meditations, prayers, visions and insights led to forming the Constitutions of the Society of Jesus on 15 August 1534; it received papal approval in 1541. Friend of James Lainez, Alonso Salmerón, Nicholas Bobadilla, Simón Rodriguez, Blessed Peter Faber, and Saint Francis Xavier, the group that formed the core of the new Society. He never used the term Jesuit, which was coined as an insult by his opponents; the Society today uses the term with pride. He traveled Europe and the Holy Lands, then settled in Rome to direct the Jesuits. His health suffered in later years, and he was nearly blind at death.

The Jesuits today have over 500 universities and colleges, 30,000 members, and teach over 200,000 students each year.

Readings
Ignatius was passionately fond of reading worldly books of fiction and tales of knight-errants. When he felt he was getting better from a wound he had received in battle, he asked for some of these books to pass the time. But no book of that sort could be found in the house; instead they gave him a life of Christ and a collection of the lives of saints written in Spanish.

By constantly reading these books he began to be attracted to what he found narrated there. Sometimes in the midst of his reading he would reflect on what he had read. Yet at other times he would dwell on many of the things which he had been accustomed to dwell on previously. But at this point our Lord came to his assistance, insuring that these thoughts were followed by others which arose from his current reading.

While reading the life of Christ our Lord or lives of the saints, he would reflect and reason with himself: "What if I should do what Saint Francis or Saint Dominic did?" In this way he let his mind dwell on many thoughts; they lasted a while until other things took their place. Then those vain and worldly images would come into his mind and remain a long time.

But there was a difference. When Ignatius reflected on worldly thoughts, he felt intense pleasure; but when he gave them up our of weariness, he felt dry and depressed. Yet when he thought of living the rigorous sort of life he knew the saints had lived, he not only experienced pleasure when he actually thought about it, but even after he dismissed these thoughts, he still experienced great joy. Yet he did not pay attention to this, nor did he appreciate it, until one day, in a moment of insight he began to marvel at the difference. Then he understood his experience. Thoughts of one kind left him sad, the others full of joy.
From the life of Saint Ignatius, from his own words, by Luis Gonzalez

Do not let any occasion of gaining merit pass without taking care to draw some spiritual profit from it; as, for example, from a sharp word which someone may say to you; from an act of obedience imposed against your will; from an opportunity which may occur to humble yourself, or to practice charity, sweetness, and patience. All of these occasions are gain for you, and you should seek to procure them; and at the close of that day, when the greatest number of them have come to you, you should go to rest most cheerful and pleased, as the merchant does on the day when he had had most chance for making money; for on that day business has prospered with him.
Saint Ignatius Loyola

If God causes you to suffer much, it is a sign that He has great designs for you, and that He certainly intends to make you a saint. And if you wish to become a great saint, entreat Him yourself to give you much opportunity for suffering; for there is no wood better to kindle the fire of holy love than the wood of the cross, which Christ used for His own great sacrifice of boundless charity.

Catholic Bible Recollection Of The Day Isaiah 12:2

Isaiah 12:2
God is my savior; I will trust him and not be afraid. The LORD gives me power and strength; he is my savior.
The spiritual translation of this verse is that God has given us the free gift of salvation. Since this gift is from God Himself and not any other being whether angelic, super-natural or of human origin, we can trust in the source which is God Himself.
Thus, we need not be afraid of the harmful works of other inferior beings since God is the source of this salvation and all we need to do is to trust Him completely.
God is the foundation of our confidence. We are safe in His hands. No snares or arrows or plots of the evil one shall touch us.
The verse in itself is a beautiful prayer of Faith, Hope and Trust in God.

Saint Peter Chrysologus
Profile
Adult convert to Christianity. Deacon. Priest. Bishop of Ravenna, Italy in 433. Fought paganism and the Monophysite heresy, enforced reforms, and built several churches and ornate altars in his see. Preacher with such language skills, he was given given the name Chrysologus, referring to his golden word. 176 of his sermons have survived; it is the strength of these beautiful explanations of the Incarnation, the Creed, the place of Mary and John the Baptist in the great plan of salvation, etc., that led to his being proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1729 by Pope Benedict XIII.

Readings
A gentle maiden having lodged a God in her womb, asks as its price, peace for the world, salvation for those who are lost, and life for the dead.
Saint Peter Chrysologus

Anyone who wishes to frolic with the devil cannot rejoice with Christ.
Saint Peter Chrysologus

We exhort you in every respect, honorable brother, to heed obediently what has been written by the Most Blessed Pope of the City of Rome; for Blessed Peter, who lives and presides in his own see, provides the truth of faith to those who seek it.
Saint Peter Chrysologus, from a letter to Eutyches, 449

I appeal to you by the mercy of God. This appeal is made by Paul, or rather, it is made by God through Paul, because of God's desire to be loved rather than feared, to be a father rather than a Lord. God appeals to us in his mercy to avoid having to punish us in his severity. Listen to the Lord's appeal: In me, I want you to see your own body, your members, your heart, your bones, your blood. You may fear what is divine, but why not love what is human? You may run away from me as the Lord, but why not run to me as your father? Perhaps you are filled with shame for causing my bitter passion. Do not be afraid. This cross inflicts a mortal injury, not on me, but on death. These nails no longer pain me, but only deepen your love for me. I do not cry out because of these wounds, but through them I draw you into my heart. My body was stretched on the cross as a symbol, not of how much I suffered, but of my all-embracing love. I count it no less to shed my blood: it is the price I have paid for your ransom. Come, then, return to me and learn to know me as your father, who repays good for evil, love for injury, and boundless charity for piercing wounds. Listen now to what the Apostle urges us to do. I appeal to you, he says, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice. By this exhortation of his, Paul has raised all men to priestly status. How marvelous is the priesthood of the Christian, for he is both the victim that is offered on his own behalf, and the priest who makes the offering. He does not need to go beyond himself to seek what he is to immolate to God: with himself and in himself he brings the sacrifice he is to offer God for himself. The victim remains and the priest remains, always one and the same. Immolated, the victim still lives: the priest who immolates cannot kill. Truly it is an amazing sacrifice in which a body is offered without being slain and blood is offered without being shed. The Apostle says: I appeal to you by the mercy of God to present your bodies as a living sacrifice. Brethren, this sacrifice follows the pattern of Christ's sacrifice by which he gave his body as a living immolation for the life of the world. He really made his body a living sacrifice, because, though slain, he continues to live. In such a victim death receives its ransom, but the victim remains alive. Death itself suffers the punishment. This is why death for the martyrs is actually a birth, and their end a beginning. Their execution is the door to life, and those who were thought to have been blotted out from the earth shine brilliantly in heaven. Paul says: I appeal to you by the mercy of God to present your bodies as a sacrifice, living and holy. The prophet said the same thing: Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but you have prepared a body for me. Each of us is called to be both a sacrifice to God and his priest. Do not forfeit what divine authority confers on you. Put on the garment of holiness, gird yourself with the belt of chastity. Let Christ be your helmet, let the cross on your forehead be your unfailing protection. Your breastplate should be the knowledge of God that he himself has given you. Keep burning continually the sweet smelling incense of prayer. Take up the sword of the Spirit. Let your heart be an altar. Then, with full confidence in God, present your body for sacrifice. God desires not death, but faith; God thirsts not for blood, but for self-surrender; God is appeased not by slaughter, but by the offering of your free will.
From a sermon by Saint Peter Chrysologus

Catholic Bible Recollection Of The Day

Catholic Bible Recollection Of The Day 1 John 1:9

1 John 1:9
God the Father forgives us our sins whenever we confess them in the name of His beloved Son, Jesus. When we call upon the name of Jesus, God our loving Father, can only look at us through the wounds of Jesus. He cannot look at us in any other way.

This supreme grace is available to us sinners freely, at all times and at any number of times. With this wonderful free gift in our hands, we are always in a state of Grace. We only have to call out.

This Grace came to us free, but came at a cost to our Lord Jesus, by His Passion and Death on the Cross.

Let us not add the Supreme Sin of treating the Blood of the Lamb cheaply, by again and again falling into sin with the carefree knowledge that our sins will be forgiven by God.

When we realize the supreme sacrifice of our Lord Jesus, we must truly repent. The key to forgiveness of sins is true repentance. With true repentance comes an aversion to sin. And with this aversion to sin, we get closer and closer to God the Father by becoming more and more like His One Beloved Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus.

Readings
Martha and Mary were sisters, related not only by blood but also by religious aspirations. They stayed close to our Lord and both served him harmoniously when he was among them. Martha welcomed him as travelers are welcomed. But in her case, the maidservant received her Lord, the creature her Creator, to serve him bodily food while she was to be fed by the Spirit. No one of you should say, "Blessed are they who have deserved to receive Christ into their homes!" Do not grieve or complain that you were born in a time when you can no longer see God in the flesh. He did not in fact take this privilege from you. As he says, "Whatever you have done to the least of my brothers, you did to me."

Catholic Bible Recollection Of The Day

Catholic Bible Recollection Of The Day James 3:9

James 3:9
Most of us wake up in the morning giving thanks to God for the gift of another day. Some of us may pray for a good and meaningful day. The vast majority of us wake up with positive feelings.
Now, try and visualize the time just before we fall asleep. Again the vast majority of us will wonder what went wrong with our day. We recollect our mistakes, failings and often feel sadness at the thought of a day that might have been spent better. With more patience, love, kindness, understanding...you get the drift.

I'm going to try and give a situation that I face most days and show that how we can overcome. As Saint James so aptly put it in chapter 3 of his letter, the tongue is evil and uncontrollable, full of deadly poison.

I wake up this morning, my first words are
Praise You Father, Praise You Jesus, Praise You Holy Spirit.
I walk downstairs to see my wife making us coffee. She wishes me a Good Morning with a smile. In the meantime, I find a floor-mat out of place and instead of wishing my wife a Good Morning in return, grumble about the out-of-place floor-mat. The smile on my wife's face fades and she becomes quiet. She has a great deal more patience than I have and so does not react.

As the day progresses, I keep finding faults and a little later, the whole house is in a state of negativity and full-blown blame-game is on. At this stage even if I realize my fault and want to make amends, I can't set things right because our household has 3 generations living together and everyone's feelings are hurt.

This is the case in most homes and communities where the first person to utter a sentence at the beginning of the day sets the trend for that day. A smile, a touch, an acknowledgement, a word of praise, a thank you, a kiss sets the trend for the day in our homes.

If you have time try and read the whole chapter 3 of Saint James's letter. It's a small chapter which you can finish in no time.

Grains of wheat, when ground in the mill, turn in to flour. With this flour we make the wafer of the holy Eucharist. Grapes, when crushed in the wine press, yield their juice. This juice turns into wine. Similarly, suffering so crushes us that we turn into better human beings.

Saint Alphonsa of India
Profile
Born in a rural area to Joseph and Mary Muttathupadathu. Baptized on 27 August 1910. Her mother died when Anna was very young, and she was raised by her maternal aunt, and educated by her great-uncle Father Joseph Muttathupadathu. At age 3 she contracted an infected eczema from which she suffered for over a year. Made her first Communion on 27 November 1917. Badly burned on her feet when she accidentally fell into a pit of burning chaff, leaving her permanently partially disabled. Joined the Poor Clare convent at Bharananganam on 2 August 1928, taking the name Alphonsa, and making her vows on 12 August 1936.

She lost her aunt/foster-mother in 1930. Worked as a primary school taught, and the children loved her for her gentleness and cheery way, but health problems often kept her from the classroom. In December 1936 she was miraculously cured from her ailments through the intervention of Saint Therese of Lisieux and Blessed Kuriakose Elias Chavara. However, in June 1939 she was struck by a severe attack of pneumonia, weakening her overall. On 18 October 1940 a thief stumbled into her room in the middle of the night; the shock of the event caused Alphonsa to suffer a loss of memory, and further weakened her. Her condition continued deteriorated for months, and she was given last rites on 29 September 1941; the next day, she regained her memory, though not complete health. She enjoyed some improvement over the next few years, but in July 1945 she developed a stomach problem that eventually led to her death.

She was noted for her suffering, and suffering in silence. Incidents of her intervention began almost immediately upon her death, and often involved the children in the convent school. Hundreds of miraculous cures are claimed for her intervention, many of involving straightening of clubbed-feet, possibly because of her having lived with deformed feet herself; two of these were submitted to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints as proof of her miraculous intervention. The continuing cures are chronicled in the magazine PassionFlower. Thousands converge on the small town of Bharananganam when they celebrate the feast of Saint Alphonsa from 19 to 28 July each year.

Saint Alphonsa to novices.

She did not want her sufferings to be reduced in the least by human attention and sympathy, nor did she want others of know of her suffering. This is a strange expression of humility, which seeks that others should never think of you.

Catholic Bible Recollection Of The Day

Catholic Bible Recollection Of The Day Habakkuk 2:14

Habakkuk 2:14
Historically, in this bible verse, God's power and might is glorified by the destruction of Babylon. Looking forward, Babylon as symbol of sin and bondage of man is destroyed and thus paves the way for all men to hear, accept and be filled with the knowledge of the One, True, Living God.

It is our God's ultimate desire that all men hear about Him, accept Him and be filled with His Holy Spirit. This verse echoes in
Isaiah 11:9
"They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea."

The coming of Jesus Christ is the fore-runner of the fulfillment of this prophesy. Jesus taught us about the Father. All of us who accept the Truth are commissioned to spread the Word of God.

The conclusion that every christian longs for is in Philippians 2:10-11
"that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Saint Panteleon
Profile

Christian physician to emperor Maximian. Life-long layman and bachelor. At one point he abandoned his faith, and fell in with a worldly and idolatrous crowd. However, he was eventually overcome with grief, and with the help of the priest Hermolaus, he returned to the Church. Brought his father to the faith. Gave his fortune to the poor, treated them medically, and never charged. Some of his cures were miraculous, being accomplished by prayer.

Denounced to the anti-Christian authorities by other doctors during the persections of Diocletian. At trial he offered a contest to see whose prayers would cure the incurable - his or the pagan priests'. The pagans failed to help the man, a palsied paralytic, but Pantaleon cured the man by mentioning the name Jesus. Many of the witnesses converted.

The authorities tried to bribe him to denounce the faith, but failed. They then threatened him; that failed. They followed up the threats with torture. When that failed, he was executed. Martyr. One of the Fourteen Holy Helpers.

Died

• a phial of his blood is preserved at Constantinople, and is reported to become liquid and bubble on his feast day

Daily Catholic Bible Verse

Catholic Bible Recollection Of The Day

James 4:3
The key take-away here is that when our prayers are based on worldly desires rather than the graces and mercies of God, they remain unheard. We often ask God for gifts with wrong aims and intentions. These aims and intentions more often than not, affect our prayer life and desire for God, which should be our driving force. God is right in not answering such prayers for worldly things.

What we forget is that God the Father wants the very best for each one of us. The greatest gift that He can bestow upon us is eternal life with Him. And anything that diverts our attention from the Path is at enmity with God.

Saint of the Day Profile

Catholic Saint of the Day Profile

Catholic Saint of the Day Profile Saint Joachim

Feast of Saints Joachim and Anne.
Saint Joachim
Profile
Husband of Saint Anne, elderly father of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Grandfather of Jesus Christ. Probably well off. Tradition says that while he was away from home, he and Anne each received a message from an angel that she was pregnant. Believed to have given Mary to the service of the Temple when the girl was three years old.

Joachim is mentioned in neither historical nor canonical writings. The information we have on Joachim derives mainly from the apocryphal Protoevangelium of James.

Born:
Galilean
Died:
the traditional tomb of Saint Anne and Saint Joachim was rediscovered in Jerusalem in 1889
Patronage:
• Adjuntas, Puerto Rico
• fathers
• grandfathers
• grandparents
Representation:
• man bringing a lamb to the altar and being turned away by the priest
• greeting and/or kissing Saint Anne at the Golden Gate
• elderly man carrying a basket of doves and a staff
• elderly man with the child Mary

Readings:
Joachim and Anne, how blessed a couple! All creation is indebted to you. For at your hands the Creator was offered a gift excelling all other gifts: a chaste mother, who alone was worthy of him. Joachim and Anne, how blessed and spotless a couple! You will be known by the fruit you have borne, as the Lord says: "By their fruits you will know them." The conduct of your life pleased God and was worthy of your daughter. For by the chaste and holy life you led together, you have fashioned a jewel of virginity: she who remained a virgin before, during, and after giving birth. She along for all time would maintain her virginity in mind and soul as well as in body. Joachim and Anne, how chaste a couple! While leading a devout and holy life in your human nature, you gave birth to a daughter nobler than the angels, whose queen she now is.
From a sermon by Bishop Saint John Damascene
