Saint John the Baptist

Memorial of The Passion of Saint John the Baptist

August 29 Memorial of The Passion of Saint John the Baptist

Profile:
Cousin of Jesus Christ. Son of Zachary, a priest of the order of Abia whose job in the temple was to burn incense; and of Elizabeth, a descendent of Aaron. As Zachary was ministering in the Temple, an angel brought him news that Elizabeth would bear a child filled with the Holy Spirit from the moment of his birth. Zachary doubted and was struck dumb until John's birth.

Prophet. John began his ministry around age 27, wearing a leather belt and a tunic of camel hair, living off locusts and wild honey, and preaching a message of repentance to the people of Jerusalem. He converted many, and prepared the way for the coming of Jesus. He Baptized Christ, after which he stepped away and told his disciples to follow Jesus.

Imprisoned by King Herod. He died a victim of the vengeance of a jealous woman; he was beheaded, and his head brought to her on a platter. Saint Jerome says Herodias kept the head for a long time after, occasionally stabbing the tongue with his dagger because of what John had said in life.

Readings
There is no doubt that blessed John suffered imprisonment and chains as a witness to our Redeemer, whose forerunner he was, and gave his life for him. His persecutor had demanded not that he should deny Christ, but only that he should keep silent about the truth. Nevertheless, he died for Christ. Does Christ not say: "I am the truth"? Therefore, because John shed his blood for the truth, he surely died for Christ. Through his birth, preaching and baptizing, he bore witness to the coming birth, preaching and baptism of Christ, and by his own suffering he showed that Christ also would suffer. Such was the quality and strength of the man who accepted the end of this present life by shedding his blood after the long imprisonment. He preached the freedom of heavenly peace, yet was thrown into irons by ungodly men. He was locked away in the darkness of prison, through he came bearing witness to the Light of life and deserved to be called a bright and shining lamp by that Light itself, which is Christ. To endure temporal agonies for the sake of the truth was not a heavy burden for such men as John; rather is was easily borne and even desirable, for he knew eternal joy would be his reward. Since death was ever at hand, such men considered it a blessing to embrace it and thus gain the reward of eternal life by acknowledging Christ's name. Hence the apostle Paul rightly says: "You have been granted the privilege not only to believe in Christ but also to suffer for his sake." He tells us why it is Christ's gift that his chosen ones should suffer for him: "The sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed in us."
From a homily by Saint Bede the Venerable on the death of John the Baptist.

Herodias harbored a grudge against him and wanted to kill him but was unable to do so. Herod feared John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man, and kept him in custody. When he heard him speak he was very much perplexed, yet he liked to listen to him. She had an opportunity one day when Herod, on his birthday, gave a banquet for his courtiers, his military officers and the leading men of Galilee. Herodias's own daughter came in and performed a dance that delighted Herod and his guests. The king said to the girl, "Ask of me whatever you wish and I will grant it to you." She went out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask for?" She replied, "The head of John the Baptist." The girl hurried back to the king's presence and made her request, "I want you to give me at once on a platter the head of John the Baptist." The king was deeply distressed, but because of his oaths and the guests he did not wish to break his word to her. So he promptly dispatched an executioner with orders to bring back his head. He went off and beheaded him in the prison. He brought in the head on a platter and gave it to the girl. The girl in turn gave it to her mother. When his disciples heard about it, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.
Mark 6:19-29

Bible Recollection Of The Day - Wednesday

Bible Recollection Of The Day - Wednesday Jeremiah 33:3

Bible Recollection Of The Day - Wednesday Jeremiah 33:3

This bible verse is set against the Babylonian exile of the Jews. Messages from God to His people, the Jews used to come regularly through the Prophet Jeremiah. These messages were ones of hope, peace and blessings in the future Jerusalem when God promised His people that their 70 years of exile would end and that they would return to their homeland. It also foretells of the blessings that God was eager to give to His people in times of His Messiah, Jesus. The second part foretells the coming of the Holy Spirit who will reveal the deep secrets of God to us. Things that were so far hidden by God from Man.

This particular verse is an expression of God eager to listen and ever ready to answer the prayers of His people.

On a more personal note, friends are of different types and having varying levels of intimacy with you. You have a small circle where you can freely share your innermost feelings without fear of judgement or condemnation. One or two may be so close to you that you often complement each other. One knows what the other is thinking and often you complete each others sentences.

Jesus is your friend, the closest thing to a friend you'll ever have. Period. He knows you so intimately that your thoughts, words and exactly how you'll react to any situation is an open book to Him. This is because He loves you and wants an intimate fellowship with you. Everything you do matter to Him. He wants to hear from you what is in your heart and what's on your mind. It doesn't matter that He already knows. He enjoys you and your company so much that He'd rather have you share it with Him first.

And you can enjoy the blessings that come with sharing everything with Him. Put Jesus first and feel the difference.

So Today,
Call out to Him.
And see the blessing pour out on you.

Perseverance Overcomes...

August 27 Saint of the Day Profile

August 27 Saint of the Day Profile Saint Augustine

August 27 Saint of the Day Profile Saint Augustine

The perseverance of Saint Augustine's mother Saint Monica's prayers for her son, touched God and He brought about the total conversion of Saint Augustine.

Profile:
Son of a pagan father who converted on his death bed, and of Saint Monica, a devout Christian. Raised a Christian, he lost his faith in youth and led a wild life. Lived with a Carthaginian woman from the age of 15 through 30. Fathered a son whom he named Adeotadus, which means the gift of God. Taught rhetoric at Carthage and Milan, Italy. After investigating and experimenting with several philosophies, he became a Manichaean for several years; it taught of a great struggle between good and evil, and featured a lax moral code. A summation of his thinking at the time comes from his Confessions: "God, give me chastity and continence - but not just now."

Augustine finally broke with the Manichaeans and was converted by the prayers of his mother and the help of Saint Ambrose of Milan, who baptized him. On the death of his mother he returned to Africa, sold his property, gave the proceeds to the poor, and founded a monastery. Monk. Priest. Preacher. Bishop of Hippo in 396. Founded religious communities. Fought Manichaeism, Donatism, Pelagianism and other heresies. Oversaw his church and his see during the fall of the Roman Empire to the Vandals. Doctor of the Church. His later thinking can also be summed up in a line from his writings: Our hearts were made for You, O Lord, and they are restless until they rest in you.

Peace I Give You

Bible Recollection Of The Day - Tuesday

Bible Recollection Of The Day - Monday John 14:27

Bible Recollection Of The Day - Monday John 14:27

In olden times this was a common form of greeting among the Jews. It calls up, from one human being to another blessings of peace and happiness in a mere human form. In this verse however, it is much more than a mere form or an empty wish. It came from Him who had power to make peace and to confer it on whom He pleased. Here it also refers to the consolation which He offers his disciples in view of His approaching death.

Jesus states that His peace is not of this world but peace that is Heavenly or Supernatural in nature and such that only He can give.

On a more personal note, you usually experience peace when you are alone. Say, that moment at the end of the day when you are just about to drift off to sleep. You heave a deep sigh and Aaah! just slowly slip away in blissful, peaceful sleep. Peace.

Or early in the morning taking a quiet walk in the woods, or a park when there's no-one around. Just quiet silence maybe broken by the chirping of birds. Peace.

The peace that Jesus gives you through His Holy Spirit surpasses all this. This Free Gift will keep you in perfect peace in the midst of chaos and confusion. All you have to do is accept this free gift from Jesus, open it and keep it in your heart.

So today,
Accept Jesus in your heart,
Accept the free gift of the Holy Spirit,
And Enjoy the Peace that only He can give you. Forever.

Nothing is far from God. - Saint Monica

Son, nothing in this world now affords me delight. I do not know what there is now for me to do or why I am still here, all my hopes in this world being now fulfilled. - Saint Monica, about the conversion of Augustine

The day was now approaching when my mother Monica would depart from this life; you know that day, Lord, though we did not. She and I happened to be standing by ourselves at a window that overlooked the garden in the courtyard of the house. At the time we were in Ostia on the Tiber. And so the two of us, all alone, were enjoying a very pleasant conversation, "forgetting the past and pushing on to what is ahead.." We were asking one another in the presence of the Truth - for you are the Truth - what it would be like to share the eternal life enjoyed by the saints, which "eye has not seen, nor ear heard, which has not even entered into the heart of man." We desired with all our hearts to drink from the streams of your heavenly fountain, the fountain of life. That was the substance of our talk, though not the exact words. But you know, O Lord, that in the course of our conversation that day, the world and its pleasures lost all their attraction for us. My mother said, "Son, as far as I am concerned, nothing in this life now gives me any pleasure. I do not know why I am still here, since I have no further hopes in this world. I did have one reason for wanting to live a little longer: to see you become a Catholic Christian before I died. God has lavished his gifts on me in that respect, for I know that you have even renounced earthly happiness to be his servant. So what am I doing here?" I do not really remember how I answered her. Shortly, within five days or thereabouts, she fell sick with a fever. Then one day during the course of her illness she became unconscious and for a while she was unaware of her surroundings. My brother and I rushed to her side, but she regained consciousness quickly. She looked at us as we stood there and asked in a puzzled voice: "Where was I?" We were overwhelmed with grief, but she held her gave steadily upon us, and spoke further: "Here you shall bury your mother." I remained silent as I held back my tears. However, my brother haltingly expressed his hope that she might not die in a strange country but in her own land, since her end would be happier there. When she heard this, her face was filled with anxiety, and she reproached him with a glance because he had entertained such earthly thoughts. Then she looked at me and spoke: "Look what he is saying." Thereupon she said to both of us, "Bury my body wherever you will; let not care of it cause you any concern. One thing only I ask you, that you remember me at the altar of the Lord wherever you may be." Once our mother had expressed this desire as best she could, she fell silent as the pain of her illness increased. - from the Confessions of Saint Augustine

Bible Recollection Of The Day - Monday

Bible Recollection Of The Day - Monday Galatians 5:1

Bible Recollection Of The Day - Monday Galatians 5:1

This verse comes from the letter that Saint Paul writes to the Jews in Galatia. He reminds his readers that they are now Free in Christ Jesus and are not be bound in meaningless ritualism. His letter exhorts the Galatians to renounce their conformity to the Jewish law and to become entirely conformed to the gospel.

On a more personal note, imagine for a moment that you are a criminal condemned to life imprisonment. You stare at the same dank, dark walls of your prison in hopeless despair. You have noting to look forward to. Nothing.

Suddenly, one day your cell gate is thrown open and the guard takes you out in the open and says that you have been pardoned and that you are now Free.

The wonder, the excitement, the joy is too much for you to bear. You feel that your heart might burst open in happiness and the feeling of Freedom.

Now, after being given this new freedom, will you do anything that might get you back in that dank, dark, hopeless prison?

Romans 6:17-18
But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.

So it is when God pardons us our sins and releases us from whatever shame or prison that our heart and soul was before. Through Jesus Christ who laid down His life for you and redeemed you with His Precious Blood.

Freedom in Christ Jesus is Forever.
When He says you're Free, He means FREE.

Daily Bible Verse - Sunday

Bible Recollection Of The Day - Sunday

Bible Recollection Of The Day - Sunday Jeremiah 29:11

Bible Recollection Of The Day - Sunday Jeremiah 29:11

This verse comes from the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem to the elders, to the priests, to the prophets and to all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away as captives from Jerusalem to Babylon. The exiles at Babylon as those in Jerusalem at that time had the same determination never to submit quietly to a foreign rule.

As the exile was God's doing for their good, God spoke through the Prophet Jeremiah that, they were to make the best of their situation. They were to work for the peace and welfare of Babylon because their next seventy years was linked to that of Babylon. And after the 70 year exile God would bring about a restoration of Israel.

On a more personal note, we as a species are forever making plans. For tomorrow, and for the future. Planners are of two kinds. One who plan a rigid scenario and are at a total loss when things don't go according to plan. The second kind are flexi-planners often with a plan B, who fine-tune their plans according to the current scenario.

We plan because we are looking at the easiest way to get things done.

God on the other hand is planning the best way. Which brings us to the plans of God. What does God want for you? Answer: To spend eternity with Him. And He is planning the best way by which He can develop your faith and character necessary for you to make your earthly journey to Heaven.

Read Isaiah 55:8-12.

So the next time you find your plans frustrated in-spite of your constant prayers, remember He's got it in hand. What seems to be inconveniences and irritants are really blessings in disguise because His plans and ways are infinitely better than yours because they are plans of His Infinite Love.

August 25 Saint of the Day Profile Saint Joseph Calasanz

Profile
Youngest of five children born to Don Pedro Calasanz and Donna Maria Gastonia. His mother and a brother died while he was still in school. Studied at Estadilla, at the University of Lereda, at Valencia, and at Alcala de Henares. Obtained degrees in canon law and theology. His father wanted the Joseph to become a soldier, to marry, and to continue the family, but a near fatal illness in 1582 caused the young man to seriously examine his life, and he realized a call to the religious life.

Ordained on 17 December 1583. Parish priest at Albarracin. Secretary and confessor to his bishop, synodal examiner, and procurator. Revived religious zeal among the laity, discipline among the clergy in a section of the Pyrenees. Both his bishop and his father died in 1587.
Vicar-general of Trempe, Spain. Following a vision, he gave away much of his inheritance, renounced most of the rest, and travelled to Rome, Italy in 1592. Worked in the household of Cardinal Ascanio Colonna as thelogical advisor for the cardinal, tutor to the cardinal's nephew. Worked with plague victims in 1595.

Member of the Confraternity for Christian Doctrine. Tried to get poor children, many of them orphans and/or homeless, into school. The teachers, already poorly paid, refused to work with the new students without a raise; in November 1597, Joseph and two fellow priests opened a small, free school for poor children. Pope Clement VIII, and later Pope Paul V, contributed toward their work. He was soon supervising several teachers and hundreds of students.

In 1602 they moved to larger quarters, and reorganized the teaching priests into a community. In 1612 they moved to the Torres palace to have even more room. In 1621 the community was recognized as a religious order called Le Sciole Pie (Religious Schools), also known as the Piarists, or Scolopii or Ordo Clericorum Regularium Pauperum Matris Dei Scholarum Piarum or Order of Poor Clerks Regular of the Mother of God of the Pious Schools; Joseph acted as superior of the Order.

The community encountered many obstacles - Joseph's friendship with the astronomer Galileo Galilei caused a stir with some Church officials. Some of the ruling class objected that to educate the poor would cause social unrest. Other Orders that worked with the poor were afraid they would be absorbed by the Piarists. But they group continued to have papal support, and continued to do good work.

In his old age, Joseph suffered through seeing his Order torn apart. He was accused of incompetence by Father Mario Sozzi, who was chosen as new superior of the Order. Sozzi died in 1643, and was replaced by Father Cherubini who pursued the same course as Sozzi, and nearly destroyed the Order. A papal commission charged with examining the Order acquitted Joseph of all accusations, and in 1645, returned him to superior of the Order, but internal dissent continued, and in 1646 Pope Innocent X dissolved the Order, placing the priests under control of their local bishops.

The Piarists were reorganized in 1656, eight years after Joseph's death. They were restored as a religious order in 1669, and continue their good work today.

Piety and Letters - motto of Saint Joseph Calasanz

Everyone knows the great merit and dignity attached to that holy ministry in which young boys, especially the poor, receive instruction for the purpose of attaining eternal life. This ministry is directed to the well-being of body and soul; at the same time, that it shapes behavior it also fosters devotion and Christian doctrine. Moreover the strongest support is provided not only to protect the young from evil, but also to rouse them and attract them more easily and gently to the performance of good works. Like the twigs of plants, the young are easily influenced, as long as someone works to change their souls. But if they are allowed to grow hard, we know well that the possibility of one day bending them diminishes a great deal and is sometimes utterly lost. All who undertake to teach must be endowed with deep love, the greatest of patience, and, most of all, profound humility. They must perform their work with earnest zeal. Then, through their humble prayers, the Lord will find them worthy to become fellow workers with him in the cause of truth. He will console them in the fulfillment of this most noble duty, and finally, will enrich them with the gift of heaven. As Scripture says, "Those who instruct many in justice will shine as stars for all eternity." They will attain this more easily if they make a covenant of perpetual obedience and strive to cling to Christ and please him alone, because, in his words, "What you did to one of the least of my brethren, you did to me." - from the writings of Saint Joseph Calasanz

Lord, You blessed Saint Joseph Calasanz with such charity and patience that he dedicated himself to the formation of Christian youth. As we honor this teacher of wisdom may we follow his example in working for truth. - opening prayer for the Mass for Saint Joseph Calasanz

Bible Recollection Of The Day - Saturday

Bible Recollection Of The Day - Saturday Hebrews 4:8

Bible Recollection Of The Day - Saturday Hebrews 4:8

Our God is a very personal God. Though He is the all-powerful, all-knowing Creator of the universe, the Supreme Being who created the stars, the planets and all creation including you and me, He still remains a very personal God.

Today's bible verse shows us that if we wish the favor of God, we must come to him. We cannot hope for His mercy, unless we approach Him and ask him for it. We cannot come any nearer to God than we always are, for He is always around us. But we can come nearer to Him in a spiritual sense. We may come to Him directly in prayer. But we can never hope for His favor while we remain at a distance from Him.

On a more personal note, God created you because He loves you.
He wants you to be in constant fellowship with Him.
He will not stand arms akimbo while you try to approach Him.
He will come running to you like the loving father in the parable of the prodigal son. (Read Luke 15:11-32)

If your neighbor's sin is so manifest that you cannot in honesty excuse it, blame not the sinner but the violence of his temptation, remembering that you yourself might have fallen as badly or even worse.

Friday Bible Recollection Of The Day

Friday Bible Recollection Of The Day Hebrews 4:15

Friday Bible Recollection Of The Day Hebrews 4:15

A High Priest is one who mediates between God and Man. An ordinary High Priest may not always be able to sympathize with our weaknesses and failings. Because he's human like us.

This verse points us out to Jesus Christ, as our True High Priest and tells us the nature and the limitless extent of the empathy and compassion of Christ. He suffers with us, not merely showing compassion to those of us who have sinned, are suffering and are being tempted, but deeply sharing in our feelings of weaknesses. Jesus can do this because He has passed through these trials, has Himself been tempted and has overcome.

On a more personal level, whenever you face a problem, a trial or difficulty, you may not always approach your best friend for help. You will more likely than not approach a friend who has in the past faced a similar situation. This is because you expect a feeling of empathy and compassion from them to help you out of the situation that you're in. But you may not always be assured of their help, maybe they're out of town, or they're too busy or just not there for you.

Jesus is always there.
Jesus is always ready.
Jesus is always waiting for you. Just say the word.
And remember He has seen it all. Been there. Faced that. Overcome it.

So today,
Call On Him.

Readings:

Lord, increase my sufferings, and with them increase Your love in my heart.
Saint Rose of Lima

Apart from the cross there is no other ladder by which we may get to heaven.
Saint Rose of Lima

Our Lord and Savior lifted up his voice and said with incomparable majesty: "Let all men know that grace comes after tribulation. Let them know that without the burden of afflictions it is impossible to reach the height of grace. Let them know that the gifts of grace increase as the struggles increase. Let men take care not to stray and be deceived. This is the only true stairway to paradise, and without the cross they can find no road to climb to heaven." When I heard these words, a strong force came upon me and seemed to place me in the middle of a street, so that I might say in a loud voice to people of every age, sex and status: "Hear, O people; hear, O nations. I am warning you about the commandment of Christ by using words that came from his own lips: We cannot obtain grace unless we suffer afflictions. We must heap trouble upon trouble to attain a deep participation in the divine nature, the glory of the sons of God and perfect happiness of soul." "If only mortals would learn how great it is to possess divine grace, how beautiful, how noble, how precious. How many riches it hides within itself, how many joys and delights! No one would complain about his cross or about troubles that may happen to him, if he would come to know the scales on which they are weighed when they are distributed to men."

Thursday Bible Recollection Of The Day

Thursday Bible Recollection Of The DayPsalms 33:18

Thursday Bible Recollection Of The Day Psalms 33:18

One of the most beautiful verses showing the faith of one who places his trust in the Lord and hopes for His Eternal Love.

The innermost feelings and workings of the human heart and soul are best known to the Creator from whom all things flow. All creation depend upon Him. And all creation seek His favor. If we are certain of God's favor towards us, then we need not fear anything that might come against us. This is put very clearly in the second part of
Romans 8:31
"If God is for us, who is against us?".

On a more personal note, God is always watching you. Not because He wants to catch you doing something wrong but because He loves you. And because He loves you, He loves looking at you, the object of His adoration. He knows your heart, your life so very intimately. He even knows when it's time for you to change your toothbrush* ( *from a very personal message from God to me which I'll share sometime later).

So today know that:
God is working behind the scenes to make your life a better one.
God is working for you to live life to the fullest.
God is asking you to take in the wonder of knowing that you're not alone.
And God is asking you to make time to share your day with Him.

Our Lady of Knock

Feast of Our Lady of Knock

Feast of Our Lady of Knock

Our Lady of Knock

Occurred:
Thursday 21 August 1879 at 8pm

Status:
Devotion approved by Archbishop Thomas P Gilmartin, Archdiocese of Tuam, Ireland in 1936.

Description:
Our Lady, Saint Joseph and Saint John the Evangelist appeared in a blaze of light at the south gable of Saint John the Baptist Church, Knock, County Mayo, Ireland. They appeared to float about two feet above the ground, and each would occasionally move toward the visionaries, and then away from them. The Blessed Virgin Mary was clothed in white robes with a brilliant crown on her head. Where the crown fitted to her brow, she wore a beautiful full-bloom golden rose. She was praying with her eyes and hands raised towards Heaven.

Saint Joseph wore white robes, stood on Our Lady's right, and was turned towards her in an attitude of respect. Saint John was dressed in white vestment, stood was on Mary's left, and resembled a bishop, with a small mitre. He appeared to be preaching and he held an open book in his left hand. Behind them and a little to the left of Saint John was a plain altar on which was a cross and a lamb with adoring angels. The apparition was witnessed by fifteen people. Miraculous healing were reported soon after the area, and it is now a major pilgrimage destination.

Readings
Truly we are passing through disastrous times, when we may well make our own the lamentation of the Prophet: "There is no truth, and there is no mercy, and there is no knowledge of God in the land" (Hosea 4:1). Yet in the midst of this tide of evil, the Virgin Most Merciful rises before our eyes like a rainbow, as the arbiter of peace between God and man. - Pope Saint Pius X

God could have given us the Redeemer of the human race, and the Founder of the Faiths in another way than through the Virgin, but since Divine Providence has been pleased that we should have the Man-God through Mary, who conceived Him by the Holy Spirit and bore Him in her womb, it only remains for us to receive Christ from the hands of Mary. - Pope Saint Pius X

My hope is in Christ, who strengthens the weakest by His Divine help. I can do all in Him who strengthens me. His Power is infinite, and if I lean on him, it will be mine. His Wisdom is infinite, and if I look to Him for counsel, I shall not be deceived. His Goodness is infinite, and if my trust is stayed in Him, I shall not be abandoned. - Pope Saint Pius X

Let the storm rage and the sky darken - not for that shall we be dismayed. If we trust as we should in Mary, we shall recognize in her, the Virgin Most Powerful "who with virginal foot did crush the head of the serpent." - Pope Saint Pius X

Holy Communion is the shortest and safest way to Heaven. - Pope Saint Pius X

The collection of psalms found in Scripture, composed as it was under divine inspiration, has, from the very beginnings of the Church, shown a wonderful power of fostering devotion among Christians as they offer "to God a continuous sacrifice of praise, the harvest of lips blessing his name." Following a custom already established in the Old Law, the psalms have played a conspicuous part in the sacred liturgy itself, and in the divine office. Augustine expresses this well when he says: "God praised himself so that man might give him fitting praise; because God chose to praise himself man found the way in which to bless God." The psalms have also a wonderful power to awaken in our hearts the desire for every virtue. Athanasius says: "The psalms seem to me to be like a mirror, in which the person using them can see himself, and the stirrings of his own heart; he can recite them against the background of his own emotions." Augustine says in his Confessions: "How I wept when I heard you hymns and canticles, being deeply moved by the sweet singing of your Church. Those voices flowed into my earts, truth filtered into my heart, and from my heart surged waves of devotion." Indeed, who could fail to be moved by those many passages in the psalms which set forth so profoundly the infinite majesty of God, his omnipotence, his justice and goodness and clemency, too deep for words, and all the other infinite qualities of his that deserve our praise? Who could fail to be roused to the same emotions by the prayers of thanksgiving to God for blessings received by the petitions, so humble and confident, for blessings still awaited, by the cries of a soul in sorrow for sin committed? Who would not be fired wiht love as he looks on the likeness of Christ, the redeemer, here so lovingly foretold? His was "the voice" Augustine heard in every psalm, the voice of praise, of suffering, of joyful expectation, of present distress." -
From the apostolic consititution of Pope Saint Pius X on Sacred Scripture
